Update: carolineHouse.exe

Hello! Dev here. It's been a few months now since re:curse released. To all of you who have taken the time to play, watch, stream, share thoughts, and even make fan content for the game... I'm truly grateful to each of you. Thank you for playing. Honestly, it still feels not-quite-real, but... Maybe that's because my work hasn't finished yet.

Since launch, I've gotten troubling reports of a "memory leak" from certain players. As a developer, it's my responsibility to investigate that sort of thing, so... I’ve been working on a program to capture that leaked data and display it in a human-readable format.

I suppose the title gives it away. You all know who it's for. I’ve tried to make it as inviting a place to live as possible. Don't get your expectations up too high, though... In my own testing, the output data was usually too garbled to make much out. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did?

Installation instructions

Installing the program is a little different from running the game itself, so I'm including some instructions below.

They differ based on which version of recurse_archaeological_release you have downloaded.

If you are on *v1.1.0* (you downloaded on or after 4/30/23):

  1. Download carolineHouse.exe.
  2. Navigate to your game folder, and place carolineHouse.exe inside the z_carolineHouse folder.
  3. Run the .exe*
  4. A console window will appear. Follow the instructions on the console from here.

*NOTE: The program may trigger a popup from Microsoft Defender SmartScreen or other antivirus software. You can safely dismiss it--I'm considered an "unknown publisher" because I didn't pay Microsoft 100 bucks for a code signing certificate.

The program itself is harmless. It cannot create, change, or delete any files, and cannot connect to the internet. I'm happy to answer any questions you have in more detail on the community forum.

If you are on *v1.0.0* (you downloaded before 4/30/23):

I built some of the house's foundations in v1.1.0. In v1.0.0 I wasn't quite prepared, so your leaked data has already escaped.

However, you can upgrade to v1.1.0 for another chance at capturing it.

  1. Download recurse_archaeological_release_1.1.0 from the main itch page.
  2. If you'd like, you can migrate and preserve your save files:
    1. Go to the main game folder of your v1.0.0 install, where Game.exe is (recurse_archaeological_release\game\re_curse).
    2. Your save data files are named "Save[##].rvdata2". Copy them.
    3. Paste them into the corresponding game folder in your new v1.1.0 install. When you load the game, your old saves will be available.
  3. If you encountered a memory leak before on v1.0.0, you will need to trigger it again from v1.1.0 to capture it.
  4. From here, follow the instructions for v1.1.0.

Depending on the state of your game, you may get different results. Hope you enjoy, and please reach out if you have any questions.

Stay curious! -dev palmer

thanks for the cool update, Dev. I'm having so much fun with the cool new update, Dev :´-)

This occurred when I tried to run the .exe. I am unfamiliar with HEUR/APC programs, and am unsure what to do.

The "HEUR" here stands for "heuristics"--basically, your antivirus can't flag it definitively as malware, but thinks it looks a little suspicious.

It's really just some simple python code packaged into an .exe, but because of the packaging and the "unknown publisher," it's bound to get flagged by more-cautious antivirus softwares. I promise it's not malware, but you'll have to take me at my word.

If you are still interested in running it, you can dismiss this flag (if it doesn't let you, you may have to disable your antivirus temporarily).

I'm happy to answer any other questions you have!

Thank you for explaining, I appreciate it! I know this kind of thing happens a lot to indie devs, and I trust that it is safe. Thanks again, and I look forward to seeing what this adds to the game's experience!

Oh I am VERY sad now but in the exact way you wanted, thank you. I am touching my monitor gently. Not actually but you get what I mean.
